I am an amateur bodybuilder. I visit the gym from time to time. Nowadays, I train only once a week simply to preserve my muscles. However, when I am in a bulking mode, I will visit the gym at least three times a week. What is bodybuilding for me? First, it is my lifestyle. I train to look gorgeous, strong, and sexy. I do not compete. Neither do I have any intentions to take a part in bodybuilding competitions. For some people, bodybuilding is simply a sports activity. For others, it is a lifestyle. Some people get involved in bodybuilding to make money. Let us see how profitable thissport is. Today's blog post will be dedicated to this very theme.
Yesterday, I was watching Kali Muscle's video on YouTube. The video was not a training tutorial. Kali shared some of his thoughts on the profitability of bodybuilding. I really liked what he said. This is why I will incorporate some of his speech in this article.
As we know, Kali Muscle does not compete. Neither had he taken any participation in bodybuilding competitions. This means he is not motivated to compete. In the video, Kali said: "I see a kid on YouTube playing games and making hundred times more money than today's Mister Olympia champions." This is absolutely true. Bodybuilding itself is not a very profitable sport. However, through bodybuilding and through participating in the competitions, it is possible to build a brand that will lead to high financial profits. To simplify, bodybuilding is very profitable when marketing and branding are turned on.
MONEY THROUGH COMPETING
I have read that preparation to a serious bodybuilding competition costs approximately 20K USD a month. Usually, a competing bodybuilder does not work anywhere. Training, eating, and sleeping is work of professional bodybuilders. So this 20K USD a month does not include money spent on accommodation, transportation, clothes, and other daily costs. 20K USD a month is spent for food and anabolic steroids. Steroids are much cheaper than food. Food will require the largest amount of money bodybuilders spend.
Thus, a professional and competing bodybuilder will need to have some sort of passive income in order to participate in bodybuilding competitions. Otherwise, he will be financially incapable to accomplish training. Some athletes are sponsored by nutritional and sports companies. Others famous bodybuilders such as Phill Heath and Kai Green have already built brands and make millions of dollars selling apparel, nutrition supplements, advertising different stuff, and making money through other means.
Let us assume someone preparing for Arnold Classic championship spending at least 20 K $ a month, then he wins it. The winner gets only 100 thousand dollars. I am sure 100,000$ will be somehow equal to the amount of money this bodybuilder spends to prepare for the competition. In 2017, Mr. Olympia Phil Heath won $ 400,000. This is not much money when we take into account the amount of money they spend to prepare and participate in the championship. Finally, we can make a conclusion that money won through bodybuilding competition does not worth all the expenses and efforts.
BODYBUILDING COMPARED TO OTHER SPORTS
Bodybuiling is not a profitable sport when we compare it to other sports. Let us think about boxing. Famous boxers might be paid 10$ million for a single fight. Lennox Louis after quitting boxing, was offered 51$ million for a fight with Klitschko. He refused the offer. What is more, boxers do not spend that enormously big amounts of money for food and steroids. Thus, preparation for fights does not require many expenses.
Football is another very lucrative type of sport. Famous footballers might get paid 20$ million a year. The least known of them get at least 1$ million a year.
Hence, bodybuilding compared to other sports is a very poor sport. If you intend to make money by winning a bodybuilding championship, you will already need to be rich. Otherwise, you won't be able to even participate.
BRAND BUILDING THROUGH BODYBUILDING
There is another very profitable way athletes use to monetize their sports achievements. Building a recognizable brand through building a gorgeous body is a very effective step. Actually, I am planning to do it myself.
Everyone loves beauty. Beautiful male and female bodies always attract a lot of attention and admiration. Nowadays, you see a lot of people who get famous on Instagram just because they are beautiful.
No doubts, a muscular body is a very powerful business asset. As I have mentioned before, most of the prominent bodybuilders monetize their muscles through personal brands. In this case, if you are a talented marketer and businessman, you will make a lot of money.
Let me give you some examples. Richard Piana was competing during his youth. Those years, bodybuilders would not make even $ 50,000 while competing. Nonetheless, Richard Piana was a millionaire since he managed to build a brand. Kali Muscle with 1,7 million subscribers on YouTube is another good example of how you can monetize and utilize your muscles to make a lot of money. Simeon Panda, Ulisses Williams, and other famous fitness athletes have good lives too.
In bodybuilding, you won't make much money by winning competitions. However, bodybuilding is a great tool to build a brand and make tons of money. Therefore, it is incorrect to say that there is no money in this sport. It is a very profitable sport if you know how to make money out of it.
