AFTER THE PROPHET BY LESLEY HAZLETON
If you look at world history, you will see that a great majority of all military conflicts were based on religious arguments and differences. Some people say that the wars are waged because of potential financial profits and benefits, but in reality, religion is the main culprit that makes civilizations clash. ‘After the Prophet: The Epic Story of Shia-Sunni Split in Islam’ by Lesley Hazleton is a wonderful book depicting the events that lead to the creation of the Shia sect in Islam.
Lesley Hazleton is an award-winning writer whose works focus on the intersection of religion, cultures, and politics. The author has also written for numerous popular and authoritative media outlets such as The New York Times, The Nation, The New Republic, and other famous media giants.
‘After the Prophet: The Epic Story of Shia-Sunni Split in Islam’ was a finalist for a PEN Center USA Literary Award. The book is not a biography of the Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.). The story begins with the death of the Prophet (S.A.W.) and the beginning disagreements among his followers regarding the succession of the caliphate. Then, Lesley Hazleton depicts different historic events that finally lead to the Shia-Sunni split in Islam. I don’t want to mention these events in order not to give you any spoilers. This is a book about the creation of the Shia sect and the events that finally lead to the great split in Islam.
Even though I have a lot of religious knowledge, I was not paying proper attention to the history of Islam. Therefore, I was somehow ignorant regarding the causes of the Shia-Sunni split in Islam. This wonderful historic masterpiece by Lesley Hazleton made me less ignorant and more knowledgable about Islamic history. I loved this book. It was written in a relaxed and soft manner. This non-fiction work is short, but yet very thorough and informative.
Nowadays, the political crisis between Shia and Sunni countries and Muslims still exists. Saudi Arabia, the world’ss most influential Sunni state will never make peace with Shia Iran, and vice versa. If you want to understand the reasons why there are conflicts and disagreements between Shia and Sunni Muslims, then, this is the first book that you should consider buying. Lover off history will surely appreciate a great piece of history depicted in this beautiful historic book.
