sex drive

sex driveWomen and men have different hormonal systems that are responsible for their emotions and physical feelings. Different types of hormones such as testosterone, estrogen, estradiol, dihydrotestosterone, and others present in different quantities in both women and men. Mainly, our hormones and neurotransmitters are responsible for the way we feel. Testosterone is the main male hormone that presents in both men and women. This hormone is responsible for sex drive, motivation, stamina, physical and emotional strength, ability to build muscle mass and simultaneously decrease the amount of body fat, the sense of well-being, and many other functions.

Men have 7 times higher testosterone level than women do. This fact explains why men usually have a higher libido, they can easily pack muscle mass, and etc. Testosterone is strongly linked to libido. More testosterone means more libido. Usually, men with low testosterone have low libidos. Castrates might have no libido at all. Can we say that testosterone has any connection with sexual pleasure? Yes, testosterone is also linked to sexual pleasure. Since hormones in our body impact the way we feel and tolerate different things, testosterone as a sex hormone is strongly associated with sexual pleasure. Nonetheless, testosterone acts in women and men differently. Also, we should keep in mind that estrogen is also responsible for sex drive. In one scientific study, men who suffered from weak libido due to low testosterone levels were administered with exogenous estrogen. In the result, their libido raised. Men who use aromatase inhibitors also suffer from weak libido even though their testosterone levels are normal. This means that estrogen plays a significant part in our sex drive.

Even though estrogen is somehow responsible for sex drive, it is not as strong at boosting libido as testosterone. Yes, lack of estrogen in men can cause some libido loss. However, testosterone still plays the major role in our sex life. Since men do naturally have higher levels of testosterone in their blood, they also have a stronger libido than women do.
